CITY TAKE A STEP CLOSER TO DREAM HOME
Thursday 23rd June 2011
The club has confirmed that it has taken a huge step forward towards its new home, it was revealed today. Mike Gibbons has been locked in talks with his project managers and consultants and it is believed that the project which is headed up by the City of Hull Sport & Community Group C.I.C. (Mike Gibbons company) is delighted with the progress and is hopeful that ground should be broken by summer 2012.
The building for which its exact location is still under wraps is believed to be staying in the Northern Area of Hull however early designs have indicated that it will be a 2 story build, with the boxing gym on the top and the ground floor will be superbly equipped with multi use facilities which will appeal to the community of North Hull.
Mike Gibbons explaines as he takes us through a virtual tour:
"The vision is, as you stand outside the building you can see a 2 story building. the top floor will be a soundly equipped boxing gym with a 16 foot and a 10 foot boxing rings, a running track will parade around the gym space, bags will hang proudly down one side with reaction bags and balls across the width. Floor to ceiling mirrors will run the length of one side of the gym. Also in the gym will be his and hers WC, a Tuck Shop and parent holding area."
"There will be 2 fire exits one in the far corner of the gym, the other to the side which will lead to outside stairs. The far corner exit will take you down to the changing facilities, showers and hopefully a sauna area. The corrider will lead you past a Facility Room and Meeting room on the ground floor. At the end of the corrider will be our purpose built dance studio which will double up as cardio studio too."
"Turning left will be the players entrance to the football and rubgy pitches also to our social suite, which will have a bar and entertainment. Above this we hope to have a viranda style area for which spectators can sit and watch the sport on the fields."
"Going back inside the building, you will continue past the toilets on the right, Ladies, Gents and disabled, before arriving to the Admin office, reception desk which over looks the main foyer, across from which is the Community Cafe which will be brought up to state of the art and look to serve quality food to the community at affordable prices."
City of Hull Sport & Community Group CIC is the organisation that has supassed all expectations when it re-opened the 1st Avenue Community Centre. Even though the building is tired and small, the company has transformed it with a footfall of around 200 people using the centre every day. Council officials and key personnel are said to be thrilled at the phase 2 of the companies plans in a project that is estimated to start in the region of £500,000.00, this figure could rise to the £750k mark once the project is under way.
"City of Hull Sport & Community Group is the towns only Community Interest Company (C.I.C.), we are regulated and we need to prove our profits are used to the good of the local community. We are relying on the support of a number of key funders and influence of some key people, however early talks and meetings suggest our vision is matched with passion and enthusiasm we share, so it all looks good" Said Gibbons.
"We have spoken to the key areas and development teams and further meetings are scheduled. We have recruited 2 key Project Managers that have a proven track record of this kind of thing and we are close to securing an Architect, all of which are working "at risk", basically means if are unsuccessful, then no one gets paid, so we quite litrally have nothing to lose."
Some have have said that when Mike Gibbons sets his eyes on something, it usually happens. Many said 1st Avenue wouldnt happen, it has!, some said nothing good would come of City of Hull ABC, it did! So history proves the success, but the new project is securing a legacy and if successful then City of Hull Sport & Community Group and of course City of Hull ABC will be set up in a state of the art building and will be so long after most of us have gone.
This has to be one of the most exciting stories to ever reach this website, we will keep posting updates as progress is made. Under the tab "New Build" you will be able to keep up to date with the latest developments as they happen.
BOXERS LOOK AHEAD TO THE NEW SEASON WITH BELIEF
Sunday 12th June 2011
Natasha Dolan, Ryan Gibbons, Jim Bob Dixon, Liam Gibbons, Tom Arnell, Brandon Stead, Kai Gibson, Callum Turner and Joshua Kinsley have all been earmarked for championship success next season with most of them entering the schools championships in the new year.
Although nothing has yet been confirmed it is believed the club will put a strong squad together for the schools titles with Ryan Gibbons potentially having a shot at the Junior ABA title with Natasha Dolan eyeing up her chances in the female championships this will make up the title haul for City with in the Junior ranks, while the senior ranks Alex Sutton, Danny Little and Charlie Payton will all be hungry for title success in Senior ABA's.
"It is at time like this during the closed season you reflect on the past season and look ahead at the new one. We have a superb junior squad and we hope to make a serious challenge next season on some titles. We have the arsenal to do it so why not ?" Said Gibbons.
Charlie Payton will be looking to build on his 2 national titles and step up a gear to the Senior ABA's along with club mate Danny Little who recently beat George Horner for his coveted Yorkshire Association Challenge belt. Alex Sutton may be looking at the novices if the ABA keep the class B division and Ryan Clarkson will be fancying his chances at the Class A crown.
"This season has barely finished and already the excitement and buzz is in the air for the new 2011/12 season. We (the coaching squad) cant wait for the first bell to sound. Our boxers will be up for it. But before then we intend to have some fun with the squad with trips away and team building trips and games. Its going to be a busy closed season for us." Said Gibbons
CITY OF HULL ACADEMY INCREASES IN NUMBERS
Sunday 12th June 2011
City of Hull ABC have announced record numbers attending their academy sessions. City who run a boxing development programme for the 5's to 10 year olds to promote the sport and show the disciplines the sport offers. So far numbers are in thier late teens and fast approaching the early 20's in numbers. A number Head Coach Mike Gibbons is thrilled to see.
"Again its all about the development of the club. Starting them young, we teach a non-contact version of the sport where we focus on fitness, stance and base as well as the core range of shots focussing on defences and footwork movement." Said Gibbons
"We turn the training sessions into a fun environment where the kids have fun while they learn. Its a positive session and the numbers are high which shows its popular. These kids will be our next generation of junior boxers so I see it as a major re-investment in our over all development programme" Finished Gibbons.
Youngsters are enjoying some quality coaching run solely by Mike Gibbons. The kids are already demonstrating sound knowledge on defences and footwork, the core range of shots. In some cases the sessions are an attitude adjustment to kids that are lets say exciteable outside the gym.
"I get calls from parents that would like to introduce discipline to their child. He or she may have issues with behaviour at home or in school. We find the strict environment in the gym helps them realise that good behaviour and attitude reaps rewards while misbehaviour doesnt. I am not saying in all cases this works, but for sure most cases it is which is supported closely by the parents" Said Gibbons.
City are confident that the young stars are showing green shoots of skills already and by the time they are 10 years old those that stick it out will develope into sound junior boxers.
City star and Yorkshire ABA Representive Ryan Gibbons (Pictured)started when he was 6 years old and is now well on his way as an established junior boxer with a 22 fight record with 14 wins. He like other juniors in the squad have a bright future inside the ring.
